Is Reclaimed Wood Furniture A Good Choice?

by Stacy Perkins on April 14, 2013

reclaimedwoodfurniture1Many people choose reclaimed wood furniture over other types of harvested wood because of its effect on the environment. Using reclaimed wood will also have lasting ecological benefits. By investing in furniture made from reclaimed wood you will be helping to preserve forests as well as protect animals habitats.

You may think that reclaimed wood is less sturdy than regular cut wood. The truth is reclaimed wood is just as durable, sturdy and is also a lot more inexpensive than regular wood.

If you would like to buy furniture that is made of reclaimed wood than your best bet is to search online. You will save the most when buying online because web based companies do not have to spend money on a store front. This will in turn pass the savings on to you.

If you do plan on buying online it is important to buy from a trusted and reliable business. Some stores can use imitation wood or cheap materials. You can search reviews on the Internet for the particular company you are interested in. These reviews should help you determine if said company sells quality products. If you can’t find any reviews about certain companies you can call them up and ask them what kind of wood they use in their reclaimed wood products.reclaimedwoodfurniture2

There are additional questions you may want to consider such as “Where do you get your reclaimed wood from?” You may also want to ask whether or not you will get a certificate that proves the authenticity of the wood. Some online retailers will age new wood to make it looks as if it is reclaimed wood. This defeats the whole purpose and is exactly what you will be trying to avoid by asking questions. Some reclaimed wood furniture is not made of 100 percent reclaimed wood. Companies will use reclaimed wood for the top of a table or the seat of a chair. This may not be entirely important to you, but ask some questions before you buy so you can determine exactly what you will receive after ordering.

Well made furniture should be expertly crafted. Some custom made wood furniture can be poorly put together. Even if the wood is high quality the manufacturing of the wood piece may not be. Some online wood furniture stores will have return policies if the piece in question is returned without damage. This is especially important when buying online because you will not be able to view and examine the furniture until it arrives. If a return policy is not easy to find on an online stores website make sure that you call them to find out what it is. This will be important information to know when deciding between a few different stores.

reclaimedwoodfurniture4If you take the time to do proper research you shouldn’t have too much trouble in finding a beautiful piece of wood furniture. Don’t be shy to ask questions. You will be able to learn a lot about a company on how they conduct themselves on the phone. Take special notes of their different policies so that you wont be confused when it comes time for you to make a purchase. You can also get recommendations from friends and family members if they have some experience in buying reclaimed wood furniture.

Good read. Using reclaimed wood for furniture seems to help a lot in protecting nature. Thanks for sharing.

The wood looks like wood from an old pirate ship. I do like it however.

I would like this in my basement or as a dinning table.

I saw one of these as a wood carving / stool in Santa Fe New Mexico. I may buy one when I visit again, although they can be pricy.
